March Impact on inclusion award: El Dorado High school

For years, Carmen Hajistathi and Heather Craig shared a dream of hosting an event where students could come together through the game of basketball. They envisioned a space where competition, camaraderie, and connection would unite students of all abilities. This year, that dream finally became a reality by hosting a Unified basketball game alongside Junction City High School. The March recipient of the Impact on Inclusion Award is El Dorado High School for their innovative event to promote inclusion in their school!

This event would not have been possible without the incredible support of Mr. Jameson, Principal of El Dorado High School, and Elliot Jacobs, the El Dorado School District Athletic Director. Their willingness to accommodate the event and provide access to the high school arena gave the vision a home and helped bring it to life.

The success of the day was a testament to the power of collaboration. The EHS Student Council kept everyone energized by running the concession stand, while students from the Intro to Education class served as ambassadors, offering guidance and support to guests and participants alike. The WOLF students brought unmatched enthusiasm, creating a lively and encouraging atmosphere from the stands.

Adding to the authenticity of the experience, several students from the EHS Officiating class completed online training in preparation for the event. They took on the important roles of referees and coaches, demonstrating leadership and commitment. Basketball coaches and student volunteers also played key roles by keeping score, coaching teams, and emceeing the event to keep the energy high throughout the day.

Behind the scenes, numerous teachers dedicated their time to chaperoning, distributing lunch, and cheering on every participant. Their support ensured that every student felt seen, valued, and celebrated.

The highlight of the event was watching Wildcats Unified and Dragons United come together not just to play basketball, but to dance, laugh, and celebrate one another both on and off the court. The joy in the arena was undeniable.

More importantly, the event represented the true meaning of inclusion. Students who participated as partners walked away with a deeper understanding of their athlete classmates, forming meaningful connections and lasting friendships. These experiences go far beyond the game itself, shaping perspectives and strengthening the school community.

It was a day filled with excitement, unity, and unforgettable moments. Students, teachers, and parents alike left with full hearts and lasting memories. What began as a dream has now become a powerful tradition in the making—one that reminds us all the impact of inclusion, teamwork, and shared joy.
